It’s time for another competition, and we’ve got yet another great prize for you—but this time, we’ve designed a fun challenge that you’ll have to take part in for a shot to win!

Before we get into the challenge, let’s take a look at the prize: a Digidesign Mbox 2 Pro with Pro Tools LE. From Digidesign’s product page:

The Digidesign® Mbox® 2 Pro is a portable, high-definition audio/MIDI production system that delivers truly professional sound quality. Packing an impressive variety of connection options into a compact interface, Mbox 2 Pro puts powerful multitrack recording and mixing capabilities into your hands, so you can create wherever inspiration strikes. Mbox 2 Pro also includes award-winning, industry-standard Pro Tools LE™ software, over 50 effects and instrument plug-ins, and the Pro Tools Ignition Pack — a collection of powerful tools to get you started creating right away.

This is the best Mbox on the market. You’re drooling, right? Here’s how to win this thing.

How to Enter

First, you’ll want to download this zip file containing an MP3 and MIDI file of the competition motif, which was designed for us by Adrien Gardiner.

Your goal is to compose a track or a loop that is based around this melodic motif. It is to be the main melodic theme of your composition. We’re looking for a track length of 30 to 60 seconds, preferably.

Contestants are free to use any software or instruments at their disposal. No pre-made percussive or melodic loops are allowed. You must compose this piece entirely from your own live recordings, single instrument samples, percussive samples, and the supplied melodic motif.

Any style of music is welcome — you can even turn this cheery melody into part of a metal piece if you wanted. You are allowed to transpose the melody into another key (but not the intervals between the notes of the melody). You may change the rhythm and tempo. The theme may be elaborated upon, giving rise to variations, so long as the original theme is recognizable as the main motif in the piece. Effects may be used freely.

Once you’ve composed your piece, upload it to AudioJungle just like your other audio stock, but make sure you let us know it is a competition entry in the file notes. You’ll want to make this a track you’d be proud to sell, fully developed and unique.

There’s one final step: once the track has been approved by the AudioJungle reviewers, head over to this forum thread and post a link to your entry so we can keep track of them all.

The Judging Process

On the 19th of September, we’ll close down submissions to the contest and Adrien, the other file reviewers and myself will choose the 20 best submissions.

You will then get the opportunity to vote on your favorite submissions, and the winner will be the community’s choice. You’ll have until midnight, the 8th of October to submit—at this point the polls will be closed, and the winner will be decided.

Remember to subscribe to this blog so you don’t miss out on the judging process.

Terms and conditions

  • Entry is open to any author who is NOT a paid Envato staff member.
  • Eligible loops must be uploaded between the date of this post and midnight Australian Eastern Standard Time on September 19th 2008.
  • In order to be entered into the competition, loops must be reviewed and approved by AudioJungle staff.
  • The winner will be selected via community poll.
  • Contestants who game or interfere with the poll will be automatically disqualified and will have their accounts banned and removed from AudioJungle.
  • Our decision is final.

  1. I shall participate!!! Good looking!!!!!!

  2. Awesome! Good luck guys! :)

  3. Sounds amazing, and extremely tempting! I guess i’m in. :)

  4. Excellent - this will be fun :)

  5. Can you submit more than one entry per person?

  6. @Emmett: Feel free to do so, but bear in mind that the winning entries aren’t drawn at random, so more entries may not give you much more of an edge.

  7. Is there a restriction on which country you live in? I’m from the UK.

  8. One more, will non-winning and winning submissions still be the property of their creators with possibility to sell in audiojungle?

  9. This is awesome. I’m in.

  10. @Tom: Not a problem. You can enter from anywhere.

@Alex: Yes, all files will remain the property of their creators. When you submit them, they’ll be sold on AudioJungle as usual.

  11. Thanks.

  12. Just finished and submitted my piece. I made two versions: one of 2:30 and one of 0:56. :D

I can’t wait to hear the other pieces!

  13. Let’s go!

  14. Hi all, just made an addition to this post I’d like to point out here. There’s a final step to the entrance process:

Once the track has been approved by the AudioJungle reviewers, head over to this forum thread and post a link to your entry so we can keep track of them all.

  15. Iuhuuuu! I’m in! :D

  16. Gravatar

    Gary Glitter

is mixing and mastering going to take a part in this???

or is it just the composition??

  17. @Gary: The better your track sounds, the better your chances. That said, the reviewers will be looking primarily at how you’ve incorporated the motif into your track.

  18. I’ll give it a shot…

  19. Great competition, thanks for putting it together!
I was wondering; As I understand it judging will be partially based on a community poll. Will the community members get to listen to the track without the audio watermark, or would it be best to leave it out of the preview this time?

  20. @Emil: It’s still best to leave the watermark in, as this file will be sold like any other on your AJ portfolio page.

  21. Can this only be 30 or 60 seconds? I couldn’t help but make it a 2:45 loop-able musical journey. :P Let me know if I should even bother. Thanks. :)

  22. @Vaisnava: That’s just a guideline; I’d say anyone who has a problem with musicians making full-length songs, has a problem!

  23. Hi again,

just to clarify, are these songs voted based upon which one sounds the best, or which one has made best use of the motif, modifying it and developing it?

  24. Hi Tom, it’ll be a combination of both — the song that sounds best and makes the most creative use of the motif. :)

  25. ENTRY IS IN! :) Gonna be fun what people manages to make from so little.

  26. Too late for me. I just discover this challenge :/
