Quick Tip #1 – Spicing Up Your Track in FL Studio 9

Don’t you just hate when you create a new track but it doesn’t have that wow factor that others have? Well think again.

If you are a FL Studio 9 user, this tip will help you a lot. Even if you’re not an FL Studio user, you can still make use of these techniques in your own software and create music that will blow peoples minds.

The techniques used in this Quick Tip work for both hip hop and dance genres.

First you need to create a loop. Start of by putting some kicks, hats and claps/snares into a simple pattern:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Pretty boring I would say. Let’s spice it up a bit by using the effect “Fruity Delay 2″. Adjust the amount of delay you are using until it sounds like this:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

You can also use this effect on other types of drum beats, like this tech drum loop.

Before effect:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

After effect:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Now, lets add a nice short melody. We are going to use a new effect that FL Studio 9 offers – “Gross Beat”. Basically it is a DJ turntable and mixer, but we’ll use it in a different way.

Use a VST plugin to make a short note the size of the loop, for example “Sytrus” which comes with FL Studio. Use the preset “Hypersaw 2″ on tech loop. It should sound like this:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

It sounds terrible! Open the effect “Gross Beat” and select “Trance Gt 2″. This chops the note like a DJ’s mixer, and turns it into a nice tune. It should now sound like this:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Do the same thing with the hip hop drum loop, but this time use the preset “Bellarina”. It is very impressive, and sounds like this:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Thanks for reading! Hopefully this Quick Tip will help you spice up your tracks.
